Hat tip to the authors.
Do you work or are you considering working night shift?
For 24 years they followed over 46,000 night shift nurses in this prospective cohort study.
Unfortunately, they found that only 8% had healthy aging.
“Health aging was defined as reaching at least 70 years of age and being free of 11 major chronic diseases, memory impairment, physical limitation, or deteriorated mental health.”
The longer the nurses worked night shift, the worse off they tended to be.
This supports prior data where circadian disruption and sleep disturbances lead to unwanted effects.
Those include increased risk of chronic diseases, mental disorders, cognitive impairment, and mortality.
Is that a health decision you’d like to make as a long-term career play?
