Cytosorb to Absorb Cytokines & Improve ICU Outcomes?

Cytokines tend to break things in critical illness.
Pro-inflammatory cytokines cause vasodilation.
Anti-inflammatory cytokines cause immunosupression.
Inventing a way to get rid of those cytokines sounds like a good idea, right?
Cytosorb has been on out the market and trialed in sepsis, ARDS, cardiac surgery or recovery after cardiac arrest in the ICU.
It sounds expensive, but does it work?
A systematic review and meta-analysis was published in May of 2023 analyzing if Cytosorb is helpful.
Hat tip to the authors. Read these data for yourself as I personally have zero experience with Cytosorb.
Was there a mortality benefit? Nope.
Was there a benefit to ICU or Hospital length of stay? Nope.
The authors also looked at vasopressors and other biomarkers with no clear benefit to our patients.
At least there weren’t any significant adverse effects.
Should we start using this type of technology in our ICU?
It sure doesn’t seem like it.
